Life as a Refugee: The Struggles and Hope for Change
Life as a refugee is incredibly difficult, and refugees represent some of the most vulnerable populations in the world. Fleeing war, abuse, terror, and poverty, refugees often arrive at camps with little more than the clothes on their backs, traumatized and malnourished. Once in the camp, they are typically given only a machete, a few bags of food, and a tent. They are told to clear land and set up their tents in conditions that are far from ideal. Tragically, refugees often remain in these camps for many years, sometimes decades.
In these camps, clean water is scarce, food is limited, and the most pressing issue is the lack of medical care. I’ve heard countless stories from mothers who have given birth on the side of the road, desperately trying to reach the only medical clinic, located 70 km away. Many refugees, especially those suffering from malaria, typhoid, and cholera (due to unsanitary conditions), are too weak to make the journey. The walk to the clinic is also dangerous, particularly for women and children, who are especially vulnerable in these settings.
The Need for a Solution: Giving Hope Medical Centre
The overcrowded refugee camps are ripe for the rapid spread of disease. This is why the Giving Hope Medical Center is so crucial. Located near the refugee camps, the medical center will provide much-needed healthcare to both refugees and local Ugandans in the surrounding area.
By God’s grace and with the support of our generous donors, the construction of the medical center is complete. We are excited to announce that the water well has been successfully installed, and the medical center is now OFFICIALLY OPEN!
Current Needs: Furnishing & Medical Equipment
We have been able to open the facilities, but we are continuing to add new equipment, supplies and furnishings to make this place suitable for refugees and local Ugandans.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors worldwide, we have successfully funded Phases 1, 2, and 3 of the project. These phases included purchasing the land, digging the well, laying the foundation, raising the walls, and completing the first coat of paint on the building.
Ongoing Support: Ensuring Long-Term Success
Now that the medical center is operational, we are still continuing to rely on donations to cover ongoing costs, including medication, medical practitioners' fees, clinic operational expenses, and training for healthcare staff.
We are deeply grateful for your support, as your donations are directly changing and saving lives every day.
